Genetics

The Answers Within You

Edith Sanford Breast Center offers genetic testing and counseling to determine if you are at an increased risk of developing certain cancers, like breast cancer. While breast cancer often develops sporadically or by chance, there are some forms of breast cancer with a hereditary component. Genetic testing is available to help determine if the cancer in a family may be caused by hereditary risk. A genetic counselor can meet with you to help determine who in the family is the best genetic testing candidate.

Genetic testing also can help our experts better understand inherited cancer risk within a family. This leads to discussion of the most appropriate screening and risk reduction options for you.

Your doctor can then take this information to create a care plan now and in years to come. Your personal care plan could include cancer screenings, like mammograms, and risk reduction options, like medication or surgery.
