A Better Picture of Breast Health
Mammograms are the best screening technology in early detection of breast cancer and are an important step in protecting your breast health. Sanford Health recommends you get screened once a year starting at age 40.
A mammogram is a safe, low-dose X-ray of the inside of your breast. During a mammogram, your breast is gently squeezed between two plates to get a good picture. This only takes a few seconds and most women experience only mild discomfort. The images produced help pick up changes in the breast that are too small to feel or see.
If you feel or see something concerning with your breasts prior to your yearly screening mammogram, you should bring it to the attention of your primary care provider for further evaluation – even if you have just had your mammogram this year.
